SHIP stands for the Samaritan Homeless Interim Program. Founded in 1984, SHIP serves Central New Jersey’s homeless and needy working families, as well as victims of drug dependency and HIV/AIDS, who are unable to obtain assistance from government or private agencies. This assistance includes emergency interim housing, continuing counseling, and other support services, all aimed at helping SHIP’S clients get back on their feet and regain self-sufficiency. The organization charges no fees for its services
SHIP also runs a number of anti-hunger programs which are supported by donations from churches and schools, along with grants from various government agencies. Among these programs are holiday meal services, emergency subsistence packages, and mobile soup kitchen disaster units. For more than three months following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, SHIP’s mobile kitchen visited Ground Zero three days a week to support rescue and clean-up crews at the site. In August 2004, at its Kitchen Galley in Somerville, SHIP celebrated 20 years of service by serving its 1,000,000th meal to the poor.
LCPC has actively supported SHIP for over 10 years.
