‘Hausmusik: Music for flute, Viola & Guitar!’ Marks the Second Concert of Music at the Corner, a New Chamber Music Series at the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church.
Flautist Bart Feller, principal flute of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and of New York City Opera will perform with Duo Fresco, an innovative ensemble comprised of viola and guitar.
LIBERTY CORNER, N.J. – On Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 3 p.m., Music at the Corner will present Hausmusik: Music for flute, Viola & Guitar!, the second in a series of three concerts presented by the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church under the artistic directorship of Christopher Kenniff and Brett Deubner, together known as Duo Fresco, a unique ensemble featuring viola and guitar. For the second concert of the 2006-2007 season, Kenniff & Deubner will be joined by Bart Feller, one of the country's leading flautists, in works by Anton Diabelli, Wenceslas Matiegka and Stephen Dodgson. The concert will be held at the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church which is located at 45 Church Street in Liberty Corner, NJ. Tickets to this event are free although a suggested donation of $10 is appreciated; further information is available by calling 908.647.0340.
‘Hausmusik’ - music to be played in an intimate setting (salon, living room) -, is term that aptly describes the repertoire presented on this concert. The works by Diabelli and Schubert’s student Wenceslas Matiegka would have been heard in a salon or shared amongst friends at an evening musicale. Franz Schubert found Matiegka’s Trio so appealing a work that he borrowed it and composed a cello part to go along with it! Renowned British composer Stephen Dodgson’s Sonata for Three is a charming contemporary work that continues this tradition of creating music to be shared amongst friends in an intimate setting.
Bart Feller is Principal Flute of the New York City Opera and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He has also appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Bargemusic and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Mr. Feller has appeared as concerto soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Jupiter Symphony. He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where his teachers included Julius Baker and John Krell; he has also worked extensively with Keith Underwood. Next summer he will return to play Principal at the Santa Fe Opera, and also perform with the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Among the other summer festivals he has participated in are the Marlboro Music Festival, OK Mozart International Festival, Colorado College Chamber Music Festival, Napa Valley Chamber Music Festival, and the Grand Teton Music Festival. Mr. Feller teaches at Rutgers University/Mason Gross School of the Arts, and the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School.
Duo Fresco, Violist Brett Deubner and guitarist Christopher Kenniff – together known as Duo Fresco – gave their first series of performances together in the 2003-2004 concert season. Of their performance on the Access to Art Chamber Music Series (Cape May, NJ), Classical New Jersey noted that the duo’s “technical and ensemble ability is impeccable” and that they “produced a concert that was one highlight after another.” The following season’s highlights included appearances at such prestigious chamber music series as Montclair’s Music Series at St. Cassian’s, William Paterson University’s Midday Artist Series, Music at St. Andrews (Middletown, Delaware), Juneau Jazz and Classics Festival (Alaska), the St. Louis Guitar Society, the New England Guitar Society and the Access to Art Chamber Music Series. The duo performed live radio broadcast performances in the Pacific Northwest and were featured on the celebrated Trinity Music Series, New York City’s oldest concert series where their performance was simulcast on the World Wide Web. Duo Fresco’s CD ‘Transfiguration’ is on the Eroica Classical Recordings label. Duo Fresco is currently an ensemble in residence at Kean University, Union, New Jersey where Brett Deubner and Christopher Kenniff are both members of the Concert Artist Faculty.
Duo Fresco has garnered high praise for their recordings and performances:
The Star Ledger (Newark, NJ) has described Mr. Kenniff as having “a lush, liquid tone, remarkably clean fingering and a nicely varied touch,” while observing that “There is a burning intensity to Deubner’s playing, and a refreshing variation in the color of his viola tone.”
Classical New Jersey has noted Mr. Kenniff’s playing for its “elegance, accuracy and impeccable technique” while describing Deubner’s playing as “extremely sensitive and expressive.”
The perfect blend of sound and style, accessibility and innovation define this exciting group’s mission of music making. Together, Deubner & Kenniff seek to further the available repertoire for their duo by working with contemporary composers and by creating their own transcriptions of existing repertoire. In the past year, Duo Fresco has premiered new works for viola & guitar by composers Victor Kioulaphides, Matthew Halper, Jose Lezcano and John Sichel and has arranged works by Henry Purcell, Marin Marais, JS Bach, Franz Schubert, Ralph Vaughn Williams and Manuel de Falla. New compositions for Duo Fresco by renowned composers Samuel Adler (Five Choral Scherzi for mixed choir, viola and guitar), Paul Mack Somers (Eight Epigraphs) and Raymond Wojick (Triptych) will receive their premiere in coming months. For more information about this program or the Music at the Corner Concert Series, please call Mr. Deubner at 973.580.2829 or Mr. Kenniff at 908.656.1548.
